Dying Wool with Onion Skins

Onion skins is a common and old favourite when dying fleece or fabric. I always save up the skins till I have a good amount and this week I decided I needed to reduce the number I had on hand so here I am boiling up the skins with some fleece wool. This dye is substantive so doesn’t need a mordant to get the dye to take.

I wanted to also try reducing the dye to form ink, so I kept sampling the dye after I removed the fleece till I got a really intense colour. I think the skins could probably have been used to create paper, but I was out of time for further experiments this week.
