The importance of scouring prior to ecodying

No that is not tea in the glass. I have been batch scouring and mordanting ready for new eco samples for Jan and some experiments I want to carry out re colour changes with different mordants. I scoured a metre of linen and 3 metres of my normal cotton and this was the colour of the water with the impurities from the fabric at the end of simmering for 2 hours with 15% soda ash by weight of fabric and a teaspoon of Fairy detergent (ph neutral) I suspect the worst of this came from the linen as the cotton is off the bolt I have been using for some time and it isn't usually this dark after scouring.
