December Cotinus Prints

Another print subject that never fails to give great prints. The colour palette alters though. Now it is quite mauve but early in the season when the leaves first come out they are almost indigo blue. It is fascinating to chart these changes. There is more moisture in the young leaves and they are usually smaller so any dye substance should be more concentrated but one theory suggests the young leaves contain more tannin to inhibit insect infestation (tannin is bitter). Most probably all these factors contribute to the changing effects that dyers can experience
