My art and creativity course introduced a research component on soap with some interesting practical experiments using soap as a resist and stamping material so I decided t take it a step further and make some of my own soap. Hear are the ingredients i used - caustic soda, coconut oil rice bran oil, olive oil, distilled water some latex moulds and a temperature gauge. I worked out at under $1 a cake of soap but the soap at this stage feels quite oily. It needs to air dry for several days yet so maybe that will improve the handle of it. Interesting experiment at any rate. I can remember my mother 'n law cooking up mutton fat and casutic in the old copper to make laundry soap - it was quite a hard soap whereas at the moment this soap is still quite 'soft.
