An Interesting Discovery About Red Cabbage

I have always been a little hesitant in using red cabbage for dying because many reports are that it is a fugitive dye. but since I had grown some in my garden I had a go a while back in dying some mordanted linen with the lovely purple water left over from semi steaming the cabbage to eat in the microwave. That sample seemed to be fairly stable so when I had a nice tight head of cabbage I thought i will use the outside leaves for dying and the inner leaves to eat - in the plant both looked the same colour. Surprise - when I boiled the outer leaves the colour in the leaf changed to a greenish brown so I tried some of the inner leaves and they stayed that wonderful purple. I wonder if there is something in that regarding the fugitive nature of the plant dye. Keep watching to see the results
