Explorations with Onion Skins

When people come to my house they must be amazed that I always have an ice cream container with onion skins at the end of my sink bench. Here is what I did with them recently as an experiment. I boiled up the onion skins in water and then added a length of scoured and mordanted cotton (tannin and alum two step treatment). After 30 minutes I removed a small piece. From this I took a slice and placed it in a weak ferrous sulphate solution. This is the sample on the left. At approximately 15 minute intervals I repeated the process so you can see the difference in the length of time the fabric was in the onion skin vat
