Is it a Break Through for Me?
I am continuing my experiments to find ways to dye on cotton using commonly found mordants. Today I found a You tube video that explained things really simply. Cotton needs tannin to set the colour. Tannins can be found in tea or walnuts but that is going to interfere with the cloth collur to begin with. Adding Cream of Tartare to the Alum process will introduce tannin without affecting the colour. I can hardly wait to try this. This would explain why the oak shavings were so dominant in the colour of the piece I did previously. I probably need to be more patient and let the bundles dry before I unwrap them too so that they get to set the colour in
