Farewell to a great man

On 20 August Sir Colin Earl Meads lost his battle with pancreatic cancer and passed away.  His enormous funeral was held in Te Kuiti last Monday 27 August.  I didnt know Colin very well but his wife, Verna was one of my computer students when I taught for the polytechnic and it was Verna who talked me into getting a bread machine. Now I am asked to make stolen for every import container for 3 G Teak and special happening.  My kids regulalrly came off the school bus to fresh bread for afternoon tea so my contact with the family has been a personal one.  I had been working on a quilt - He Tangata-nui o Te Kuiti.  Great people of Te Kuiti , which featured Sir Colin and my brother'n law, Sir David Fagan.  These two men, a generation apart, did not just achieve excellence in their sport but gave back so much to that sport, to this community and to New Zealand.  Colin Meads is arguably the best known rugby icon in the world.  And David has to be the greatest shearer of all time. I had to work hard to get there but I finished the quilt in time for it to be hung in Smarty Pants window for the week of the funeral
